Summer & Anxiety: Ways to beat the summer heat and ease anxiety!

Summer, the season of sunshine and warmth, can be both invigorating and challenging when we experience anxiety. While the bright days beckon us outdoors for fun and adventure, the rising temperatures can also trigger anxiety-like sensations in our bodies. The heat, coupled with potential dehydration and skipped meals, can activate our sympathetic nervous system, creating a perfect storm of discomfort.

Let's explore ways to cope with the summer heat and find ways to ease anxiety during these hot months.

1. Stay Cool and Protected: When stepping out into the sun, ensure you're well-prepared to beat the heat. Wear sunscreen and a sunhat to shield your skin from harmful rays while keeping your head cool. Additionally, donning light and breathable clothing can make a significant difference in managing your body temperature.

2. Seek Shade and Take Breaks: When the sun is at its peak, and the heat feels too intense, don't hesitate to seek shelter in the shade. Taking regular breaks indoors or under the cool canopy of trees can help you recharge and prevent overheating. A moment of respite can also soothe anxious nerves and provide a sense of calm.

3. Embrace Ice Therapy: Keep ice packs or cool towels nearby to combat the heat. Placing an ice pack on your forehead or the back of your neck can help regulate body temperature and ease the sensations that mimic anxiety. Alternatively, sipping cold water or herbal iced tea can be refreshing and hydrating.

4. Stay Hydrated and Nourished: Dehydration can exacerbate feelings of unease and discomfort. Make it a priority to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Similarly, don't skip meals, and opt for light, hydrating foods like fresh fruits and vegetables to maintain energy and balance.

5. Create a Cooling Environment: Utilize fans or air conditioning to keep your living space cool and comfortable. Taking a cool shower or bath can also be refreshing and aid in relaxation, helping to reduce any anxiety that might arise from the heat.

6. Practice Mindful Breathing: During hot moments when anxiety-like sensations arise, practice mindful breathing techniques. Slow, deep breaths can help regulate the nervous system and provide a sense of calm amidst the rising heat.

Remember, the key is to prioritize your well-being during the summer months. Being mindful of your body's needs and taking steps to stay cool and comfortable can contribute to a more relaxed and enjoyable summer experience.
